This is an oil study. blocked in on-site and finished in the studio from previous on-site studies. The Rychenback flows down the mountain for about 4 km and ends in the Riechenbach falls, the scene of the mortal fight between Sherlock Holmes and his arch.enemy, Prof.Moriaty who both fall into the chasm as depicted in the book by Conan Doyle. Though fictional characters, a museum to honour Sherlock Holmes exists in the town of Meiringen in the valley at the foot of the falls. The painting shows the Rychenbach as seen from a bridge just below the plateau from whence the full panorama of Rosenlaui comes into view (see this collection) In painting this scene, usually contre-jour, one needs to decide how dominant the Wellhorn is to be in the painting. An excecise in values and details.
